My Top 5 Must-Have Items for Every Ride (And Why They Make a Difference)

My Top 5 Must-Have Items for Every Ride (And Why They Make a Difference)

From Dressage Lessons to Backcountry Trails – My Go-To Gear

The beginning of my riding career started as a young horse enthusiast who would take any opportunity to ride—jumping, vaulting, you name it. Eventually, I found my true passion in dressage. In most English disciplines, the gear needed is fairly similar, though our tack differs depending on the discipline. That was the very beginning of my obsession with tack collecting.

As I got older, my love for dressage grew—but so did another passion: trail riding, and even backcountry camping with my horses. That shift meant expanding my knowledge and gear to suit both English and Western styles. I feel incredibly lucky that my passion led me in this direction. Not only do I now have an exceptional understanding of English equipment, but I’ve also pushed myself to become well-versed in Western gear too.

Whether I’m heading out for a dressage lesson or packing for a trail ride, these five essentials are always with me.

1. Lemieux Stitched Leather Halter – A Daily Staple

Every single one of my six horses has one of these! I absolutely love them. They’re made of beautiful, soft leather with a great anatomical design. Not only do they hold up incredibly well, but they also look super sharp. These halters are a total staple for me—strong, stylish, and reliable.

2. Tipperary Devon MIPS® Helmet – Safe & Stylish

I love my Tipperary Devon helmet and use it for both daily rides and competitions. Tipperary has done an amazing job creating a helmet that’s not only safe and proven but also beautiful and affordable. It fits well, looks sleek, and gives me total confidence in the saddle.

3. Lemieux Saddle Pads (With Matching Polos & Bonnet)

LeMieux saddle pads are my go-to—whether I’m training at home or riding at a show. I often match them with polos, brushing boots, and bonnets. These pads are stylish and super practical. They come in so many beautiful colours and wash amazingly in the machine. If you’re looking for a balance of fashion and function, this is it.

4. Scoot Boots – A Trail Rider’s Best Friend

If you follow me, you already know: I swear by Scoot Boots. I have three trail/western/lesson horses—all of which use them.

Here’s why I love them:

  • They save me money—no need to shoe these horses year-round.

  • They’ve saved the day when a horse has pulled a shoe, gotten stone bruises, or needed extra support.

  • They’re lightweight, breathable, and let water, sand, and mud flow right through—no trapped debris.

Honestly, I’ve tried a lot of hoof boots over the years, and Scoots are by far the best. Even if you only ride occasionally, I think everyone should have a pair in their tack room—if not for regular use, then at least for emergencies.

5. Confidence, Comfort & Practicality

Okay, this one isn’t something you can buy—but it’s still essential. The right gear has a massive impact on your confidence, your horse’s comfort, and your overall riding experience. Investing in high-quality, functional items has made me a better, more prepared rider. That peace of mind is priceless.

From the dressage arena to BC’s rugged backcountry, I’ve learned that being prepared isn’t just about packing the right gear—it’s about understanding what works for you and your horse. These five essentials are non-negotiable for me because they consistently offer comfort, safety, reliability, and confidence—no matter the ride.

Each one has earned its place through real-world use.

  • My halters and helmet keep me and my horses safe and looking sharp.

  • My Lemieux pads make daily training and competition smooth, stylish, and stress-free.

  • My Scoot Boots have saved me time and again on the trail—and in emergencies.

  • And having the right gear overall gives me the confidence to ride at my best, whether I’m in the ring or on a multi-day backcountry adventure.

These five items have genuinely improved my riding experience, helped me care for my horses better, and made me feel more confident every time I step into the saddle.

I encourage you to take a look at your own gear list.

Ask yourself: What are your non-negotiables? What items make a real difference in your ride—physically or mentally? I’d love to hear about your must-haves and what you swear by in your routine.
